Information Architecture

Information architecture is a method of determining the organization and structure of elements of a web site. This effort results in something called a "wireframe" that then informs the graphic design ("look-and-feel") of actual templates. The web project team has created, based on research of similar web sites, an information architecture for four typical university web sites.

Customers migrating a web site into the CMS may opt to use the default configuration, or request changes to meet their unique needs. The campus is invited to look at – and comment on – information architecture developed for several typical types of university web sites. (Bear in mind that information architecture is a representation of structure and organization - the "bones" of a web site if you will - not a "design".)

Non-academic and administrative departments pose a unique challenge due to differences and variety. For example, they range from student health services to the print shop to professional development for faculty and staff. Kinkos' web site doesn't share much in common with Central Texas Medical Center's site. As a result, there is no default navigation structure for these types of sites. As part of our "Information Session" presentation, we provide some tips and guidance on how to devlop such a structure for your area.
