Training & Workshops

Hands-on training sessions are available for individuals who will be working on their Department's website in Gato.  Advance registration is required. Seats are limited to the first 18 individuals who register.





PLEASE NOTE! Organizations that are new to Gato MUST have attended a Gato Information Session before sending users to Gato Training Classes. Users do NOT need to attend an Information Session if the organization's site is already in Gato.

Gato Information Session & Web Best Practices
This presentation introduces Texas State organizations to the new web content management system, "Gato" followed by Web Best Practices. Designed to be user-friendly for the non-technical user, Gato can help colleges, departments, programs, centers and institutes manage complex web sites more easily. Come discover the process of migrating your organization's existing website into this new system as well as some web best practices to help improve your site.

NOTE: This orientation presentation is NOT a training class for the Gato system. Please see below for availability of training classes.




Gato CMS Training

Gato - "Using the Content Management System, Part I"
Get started using the CMS to build your web site. This class will introduce you to the editor interface for the web site content management system. In a hands-on environment you'll learn the basics to get you started developing your new web site, including how to how to create new pages, add, delete, and adjust navigation and links, and add text, images and downloadable documents to your pages.  This workshop will be cancelled if fewer than 5 people register.









Gato - "Using the Content Management System, Part II"
Part two of "Using the Content Management System" will introduce you to additional features of the system not covered in part one. This hands-on class will show you how to include a photo gallery or streaming video and how to create web forms and a site index, as well as how to use preformatted layouts, anchors etc. Get some tips and trick for making the most out of the content management system.  This workshop will be cancelled if fewer than 5 people register.









Using the Gato Document Management System

The Gato Document Management System (DMS) will allow you to easily upload, manage and share documents throughout your Gato website. Like the Gato content management system, the DMS is designed to be easy to use. It works very much like the rest of Gato, with document management taking place in Admin Central and display of documents taking place through Gato Edit and the Documents paragraph type.  This workshop is a part of Gato II.  If you are attending the Gato II workshop there is no need to sign up for the DMS workshop.  This workshop will be cancelled if fewer than 5 people register.





Gato - "Creating Forms"
Still a bit unclear on how to create a working email form? Want a little more detail on the new features available (after November 13th) for forms? Then this class is for you. Come learn how to create and configure a simple form and improve your ability to interact with your users through your web site.  This workshop is a part of Gato II.  If you are attending the Gato II workshop there is no need to sign up for the Forms workshop.  This workshop will be cancelled if fewer than 5 people register.





Gato - "Web Metrics: Understanding Your Site Statistics"
You've spent days or weeks building your new website, now find out how it's being used! Every site in GATO has a detailed site stats. Understanding your website traffic is crucial to managing a website on a daily basis. Come learn about what the Web statistics terms really mean, and which ones you should be most interested in.  This workshop will be cancelled if fewer than 5 people register.

The following courses have no prerequisites and are open to all.

Writing for the Web
Writing for the Web is very different from writing for print, since Web readers tend to scan text online and read text offline. Come get tips on how you can dramatically improve the usability of your web site without too much effort, based on current research.  This workshop will be cancelled if fewer than 5 people register.




Web Best Practices
Didn't attend an information session? Need a refresher on web best practices? Come for an encore presentation of important tips for improving your web site. This presentation covers usability, information architecture, navigation, design, getting user input and writing for the web.  This workshop will be cancelled if fewer than 5 people register.
